What the forests of Kerala have been turned into in the name of tourism never fails to shock me. Building plans are approved in sensitive landscapes without analyzing potential consequences of the same, and when later years bring suffering upon us, we wonder why. While it is true that tourists require options of stay, the fact remains that the rightful habitat of the original inhabitants, that is, various species of flora and fauna, are destroyed for this purpose. It is bad enough that we have recklessly expanded our cities under claims of 'development'. And where has the hue and cry of 'sustainability' gone, pray? We can only go on for so long after losing tree cover and endangering biodiversity. Even planting trees for the lost greenery remains a charade.
As for those who barrel into the national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, eager to confront tigers and elephants just for the adrenaline rush or for the 'likes' on social media, these seekers of "bubble reputation" may well lead to barring of tourists to these preserved areas, the remnant of a more verdant past, and the only hope for the future. Because to be a tourist entails certain unwritten civic responsibilities -
  • First and foremost, to abide by the laws of the jungle and not disturb the animals in any way. Whatever be their size or position in the food chain, their survival is as important as yours.
  • Follow the instructions of your guide.Do not feed the animals, take photos in prohibited areas or venture into the deeper folds of the forests.Avoid using flash while taking pictures.
  • As far as possible, wear green clothing, avoid cologne and let conversation take a backseat while you are in the woods. Be silent and observant and you will be rewarded.
  • Do not litter the jungle. Though this applies everywhere, it has added importance in these protected areas, since plastics are non-biodegradable and pose a threat to scavenging animals.
  • Try to learn about the species inhabiting that particular forest and soak in the pollution-free atmosphere.
Here I refer to travellers venturing particularly into forest landscapes and jungle safaris. Please remember to respect the laws of the jungle. If you still need a reason, here is a slogan issued by conservationists: Global Warming - tree is the answer. If you have not been ignorant of the rising temperatures, that is incentive enough.
