I watched Kabali more to know what the hype was about than anything else.I am not a Rajini fan per se, therefore I didn't try too hard to get tickets the same weekend of the release, never mind the first day.The worldwide promotions were hard to miss, with the trailer and songs popularised over varied media beginning a month or more prior to the film hitting theatres(not to mention the star adorning AirAsia flights to Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur) , so much so that the 'Neruppu Da' score was a common favourite by that fateful Friday, with the background music (starring the toxic electric guitar and drums)blazing out of speakers and mouths several times a day.Even before the release date, Kabali broke several records, clear signs of fans lapping up the Thailaiver's salt and pepper,as well as vintage look, the world over.
The tricky question is, did Kabali live up to the expectations?Yes and no.Director Pa.Ranjith has worked at bringing down the actor's stardom and awakening the potential in him, claiming that 'this is not a regular Rajnikanth film.'That much is true. Rajinikanth's prowess ,added to praiseworthy performances by Radhika Apte and Dhansika, among others, keeps us hooked to our seats. But overall, the film turns out to be an average gangster flick - an aged don grappling with the changing scene once he is released from a long imprisonment, with a lot of money and gunfire thrown in.Of course, there are the noble bits - the tale of how an ordinary man made it to the top by uplifting the needy, his life, love, and struggles- and these are the parts that stand out in a film that otherwise offers no surprises.Ardent fans, though, surely had a field day at the 3000+  screens, with shows beginning as early as 4 a.m. on day 1.
I would say that Rajinikanth's comeback after six years is not completely devoid of his established persona in celluloid;the lingering elements just have a better sheen to them.
Fan or not, what you shouldn't miss is the commendable soundtrack by Santhosh Narayanan. While 'Neruppu Da', 'Ulagam Oruvanukka' and 'Veera Thurandara' portray the don's popularity and supremacy, the evocative tunes of 'Maya Nadhi' and 'Vaanam Paarthen' exemplify love and hope as being a man's anchor in the ride of life. So,worry not if you are unable to get your hand on a few tickets to the most awaited movie of the year; you can easily listen to rewarding music instead.
