'Kapoor and Sons',a hit? Surprising. Despite an interesting cast, but  with names like Alia Bhatt on board, I hadn't expected much from this movie. The songs are fine, the trailer left me fairly sure that the story involved a love triangle. The actors kept insisting that the movie is about family issues, though, and this is where they have played their cards right. The promos reinforce the image of the two brothers(Fawad Khan and Siddharth Malhotra)falling in love with the same girl(Alia Bhatt),but those who take the chance and actually watch the movie are bound to be startled yet happy.
Yes, 'Kapoor and Sons: Since 1921' is the story of a dysfunctional family set in Coonoor, south India, with stellar performances by Rishi Kapoor,Rajat Kapoor,Ratna Pathak and Fawad Khan. Harsh and Sunitha's two sons are novelists - Rahul (Fawad) already has a bestseller to his name and is settled in London, hereas Arjun(Siddharth)is struggling to gain stable ground in the same field while working part-time as a bartender in New Jersey. When the eldest of the family is hospitalized following a heart attack, the youngsters are called back home and then on begins a trail of arguments within the family. The Kapoor parents are tensed about financial issues, their youngest son carries years of resentment for being only the "second best" and amidst all this is Rishi Kapoor,  huddled in a wheelchair, but is by no means, hindered in life.Whatever the conflicts in the family, he is a beaming ray of sunshine, watching adult films on his grandson's ipad ('I-pappad"),a sprite and lovale grandpa who likes to enact his death from time to time. His lifelong wish has been to have a framed family photo in the house with the film's title serving as the caption. Meanwhile, Alia comes into the picture('Kar Gayi Chull'),a garden party is thown to celebrate grandpa's 70th birthday('Buddhu Sa Mann') and...Harsh Kapoor's affair with Anu aunty comes to light and adds fuel to the fire. Problems keep popping up. Arjun suspects Rahul of stealing his story to write his novel, Alia gets intimate with both the Kapoor grandsons, Rahul is revealed to be gay,  and  then things boil down to the morning of the family photo shoot outdoors. Harsh and Sunitha have a major fight(heavy rain backdrop),Harsh drives off and is hit by a truck in just the second he takes to attend what would have been  Sunitha's reconciliatory call.  He dies.I  never expected a tragic scene in this movie, but there you go. The ensuing, inevitable is sure to move everyone to tears. Harsh's brother and his family pay a second visit and stay a month. The final scene is heartbreaking. They finally make arrangements for the family photo and when Alia and Arjun's friend,Wasim, bring a covered cutout (frankly,I expected it to be Mandakini again)of Harsh, the family were finally coming together after a long period of struggle. The scenic locales of Ooty have really complimented the storyline and the background score is very evocative. The only disappointment is Tia(Alia),but she is only a minor character.
I wouldn't say this is an exceptional movie, but for those who enjoyed films like 'Dil Dhadakne Do', this will be an enjoyable, relatable story, especially since it is  about  an ordinary family facing normal trouble, like you and me.
